He Was Supportive

“Hey, Flynn,” Sam said when Flynn knocked on his door first thing Monday morning. “No surgery for you?”

“Soon,” he said. “I was hoping to catch you though.”

“Sure, what’s going on?”

He shut the door to Sam’s office. “I’ve been dating Julia McNamara for a few months now.”

Sam burst out laughing. “Damn. That is funny. Here I was ready to give her your number. No wonder why she said she was good. She had it already. My parents and aunt and uncle are going to flip when they find out.”

“I’m sure. My mother is in on it too. I’ll talk to her tonight.”

“She doesn’t know either?” Sam asked. “Why am I finding out before them?”

“Mick came over yesterday morning when I was at Julia’s having breakfast. He has a key and walked in.”

“Oh boy. I can totally see this now. Mick doesn’t seem so thrilled with the idea of his sister dating someone.”

“I think it has more to do with me,” he said. Julia told him everything that happened yesterday. He wasn’t sure what to think. He’d been thrilled she stuck up for him but pissed that he was being judged by his career when Mick had the same damn one for the most part.

“Mick and you don’t know each other that well, do you?” Sam asked, frowning.

“No. Just in passing or his name being brought up. He says doctors are dicks and doesn’t want his sister with one.”

Sam laughed even harder. Flynn wasn’t finding this funny. “Well, we know the truth to that. Still, that is kind of harsh.”

“I don’t know the guy,” he said. “You do.”

“And you want some brotherly advice?”

“I wouldn’t mind something,” he said.

Flynn wasn’t going to talk to his mother about this. He didn’t have a father to ask and not too many close guy friends. Not enough to confess this to. Sam was about as close as he could get and knew he’d get a better answer than from anyone else.

“I’ve had some brothers not be so happy about me dating their sister. Some fathers too. Dani’s dad was pretty cool though. We were older and maybe had both gone through our wild phases. Though I can tell you right now I’m not my wife’s favorite person.”

“I’m sorry. How is she doing?”

“She is very uncomfortable and the boys are pretty squished inside of her. I’m not sure we are going to term, but she still has to get another six weeks. She was pulled out of work this week, so yeah, not happy.”

“She owns the business,” he said. He knew Dani owned her own salon, but she was on her feet a lot too.

“She does. She has been working less and less, just managing it, but she needs to cut back. She can go in a few times a week to check on things, but no more work for now.”

“And I shouldn’t be bothering you with this.” He’d been selfish only thinking of himself last night after talking to Julia.

He knew she was upset and angry.
